VDV-Schrift 551E, Print-Version, K1551E_2017, Overhead Contact Line Poles, Pole Foundations and Wall Anchors Ausgabe 08/2017 VDV Recommendation 551 specifies overhead contact line poles and wall anchors for urban DC rail systems operated pursuant to the German Federal Regulations on the Construction and Operation of Tramways (BOStrab), the German Federal Regulations on the Construction and Operation of Railways (EBO) and the German Federal Regulations on the Construction and Operation of Narrow-Gauge Railways (ESBO), i.e. for tramway and light rail systems as well as trolleybus systems. Moreover, it comprises an overview of the pole foundation variants. It is the objective of this Recommendation to provide the employees responsible for overhead contact lines (OCLs) in public transport companies, engineering firms, the supply industry and building enterprises with advice on the design, dimensioning and selection of poles and their foundations. The Recommendation goes into detail with the actions, load cases and load combinations that the poles have to withstand and that have to be specified by the operators of OCLs. Moreover, it gives an overview of the foundation variants inclusive of their advantages and disadvantages as well as of the requirements for wall anchors, which are an interesting alternative to the classic pole foundation. The 08/2017 edition of VDV Recommendation 551 is the result of a revision of the 12/2014 edition; this revision was mainly of an editorial nature and only comprised a few modifications of the contents. VDV Recommendation 551 is still based on EN 50119 “Railway applications - Fixed installations - Electric traction overhead contact lines”, which was published in 2010 and supplemented in 2014. This European standard has clearly influenced the design of overhead contact lines and considers the effects of the EU construction products regulation (Regulation (EU) No 305/2011) on the poles. Thus, structures are now designed and dimensioned on the basis of the so-called Eurocodes. However, the failure and serviceability limit states also have to be considered for the design.
