VDV-Schrift 506 Design of and Protective Provisions for Electrical Power Installations in Depots and Workshops for DC Mass Transit Systems englische Version Ausgabe 06/05 VDV Recommendation 506 focusses on electrical power installations in depots and workshops for DC mass transit systems. Particular attention is paid to special conditions for the realisation of earthing measures and protective provisions within DC networks having connection to AC networks. It is the objective of this Recommendation to give persons responsible for such systems, e.g. project planning engineers, pointers and practical examples to make it easier for them to solve problems practically. The previous Recommendation, i.e. VDV Recommendation 500 entitled “Earthing Measures for DC Traction Systems with Examples of Execution”, dated from 1991 and was based on the DIN standards and VDE regulations valid at that time. Particularly Part 1 “Railway Applications; General Building and Protective Provisions” and Part 3 “Railway Applications; Special Provisions for Fixed Traction Systems” of the national standard DIN VDE 0115 made up the basis for the planning of the electrotechnical installations of the traction systems in the Federal Republic of Germany; this standard was published in June 1982. A revised edition of this standard was only published as a draft in April 1985 because it was no longer allowed to publish the final national edition as European standardisation had been initiated in CENELEC/TC 9X “Electrical and Electronic Applications for Railways”. The TC 9X working group WG C1 “Safety, Earthing, Protection in Fixed Installations” prepared EN 50 122-1 entitled “Railway Applications – Fixed Installations – Part 1: Protective Provisions Relating to Electrical Safety and Earthing”, which was published as the national standard DIN EN 50 122-1 (VDE 0115 Part 3) in December 1997. Both the drafts and Parts 1 and 3 of the final edition of DIN VDE 0115 from June 1982, which had been used until then, were replaced by this European standard; the contents not governed at a European level were included in the national DIN VDE 0115 Part 1, a so-called residual standard. For this reason VDV Recommendation 500 had to be revised. At the request of transport undertakings, engineering offices and industry it was decided to include pointers about the construction and design of technical power installations. However, in order not to produce a Recommendation with too vast contents, the VDV - 5 - Committee on Electrical Power Installations decided to subdivide the contents into three parts: – VDV Recommendation 505: “Design of and Protective Provisions for DC Rectifier Substations for DC Mass Transit Systems”; – VDV Recommendation 506: “Design of and Protective Provisions for Electrical Power Installations in Depots and Workshops for DC Mass Transit Systems”; – VDV Recommendation 507: “Design of and Protective Provisions for Electrical Power Installations Along DC Mass Transit Lines”.
