Residual current protective circuits can be applied in electrical power installations of DC urban rail systems if certain conditions are fulfilled and suitable switching equipment applied. They provide protection against indirect contact (fault protection) and simultaneously complete separation between the protective conductor of the supplying network and the return circuit of the DC urban rail system at low cost. This VDV Recommendation intends to provide persons responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of electrical power installations of DC urban rail systems within transport companies with information and practical examples as to how the practical application of residual current protective circuits can be facilitated. The present edition of VDV Recommendation 509 was modified or supplemented as follows compared with the predecessor Recommendation: • Consideration of all new European standards concerning residual current protective devices (RCDs); • Presentation of the varios types of RCDs; • Inclusion of pointers about the planning of lighting and power installations with RCDs. VDV Recommendation 509 replaces VÖV Recommendation 4.33.1 from 1985.
